St David's Day is celebrated on the 1st March each year in Wales.
Very little is known about St David, known in welsh as Dewi Sant. St David died in the year 589, but his biography was written in the 11th century by Rhigyfarch. With around 500 years between the life of St David and hist story being written, it is inevitable that the border between fact and legend is quite blurred.
St David was a royal descendent; his father, Sant, was the son of the Prince of Ceredigion (a region of South West Wales). His mother, Non, may have been related to King Arthur.
Many miracles are attributed to St David. One notable miracle occurred during a sermon at the Synod of Llanddewibrefi, where the ground below St David is said to have risen, so that he could be seen and heard by all the listeners.
St David's Day is a day of great celebration in Wales with lots of singing and dancing. It is customary to wear a leak or daffodil on St David's Day, two of the
national emblems of Wales. And of course, it's also customary to send St David's Day Greeting Cards!
